Do you want to improve your bow-making skills? Have you wanted to make handmade bows but don't know where to start? You're not alone! Today, we’ll show you our favorite way to make a lovely bow with a wired ribbon. The method creates a casual yet elegant bow and is very easy to follow.

In a recent study, the  Bonding Wires and Ribbons Market states that the Global Bonding Wires and Ribbons market is anticipated to rise at a considerable rate during the forecast period, between 2023 and 2031. In 2024, the market is growing at a steady rate, and with the rising adoption of strategies by key players, the market is expected to rise over the projected horizon.

Choosing a ribbon is the most enjoyable part of making bows. There are many types of ribbons. My favorite is wired ribbon because it makes shaping bows very easy. The wire helps the bow keep its loops and tails in shape.

What does Wired Ribbon Mean?

What does Wired Ribbon mean?

There are two main types of ribbon: wired and non-wired. Wired ribbon has a thin wire along its edges to hold its shape. The non-wired ribbon has no wire. You can remove the wire from the wired ribbon by pulling it out, and you can add wire to any ribbon using a serger. Refer to your serger’s instructions for details.

Common ribbons for home decorating and sewing projects include:

  • JACQUARD RIBBON - Jacquard ribbon adds elegance to decor and clothing. It features a distinct pattern with a clear right and wrong side and is available in various widths and colors. It is washable and commonly used for trims.

  • WOVEN RIBBON - Woven ribbon, up to 8 inches wide, has heat-sealed edges and includes types like grosgrain with crosswise ridges. It’s often used interchangeably with jacquard ribbon.

  • DOUBLE-FACE SATIN RIBBON - Double-face satin (DFS) is shiny on both sides, while single-face satin (SFS) is shiny on one side. DFS is ideal for visible ribbons, while SFS works well for other uses.

  • GROSGRAIN RIBBON - Grosgrain ribbon is used in many crafts, including bead making, book-binding, trimming, and decorating. It is also the main ribbon used for hair bows.

  • SILK RIBBON - Silk ribbon is luxurious and has a unique shine. It often comes with wire for easy shaping. We can order it for you; prices vary by width.

  • VELVET RIBBON - The velvet ribbon has a plush surface and a plain back. It’s washable but should be pressed carefully to maintain its texture.

  • How Can I Make a Bow Using a Wired Ribbon?

How can I make a bow using a wired ribbon?

Select the right ribbon for your diy bow project. To make a bow with wired ribbon fuller, add extra loops and tails. When making the loops, ensure they are even and the same size. Hold the center of the bow tightly while making each loop to keep its shape.

Here are the following steps on how do you make a bow from wired ribbon:

Step 1: Cut a 60-inch length of your chosen ribbon with sharp scissors.

Step 2: Place the ribbon on a mat and measure 10 inches. Pinch the ribbon at this point.

Step 3: With the first pinch in your fingers, measure out 8 inches and pinch here as well. Bring this pinch to the back and twist the ribbon so the printed side is on top, forming a loop with both gathered points.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 to create five more loops. Adjust the ribbon length and number of loops to fit your desired look.

Step 5:Secure the bow's center with a pipe cleaner or floral wire, wrapping it from the top down. Point the ends to the back or bottom of the bow. (Alternatively, use a zip tie if needed.)

Step 6: While holding the pipe cleaner, twist it tightly to secure the bow.

Step 7: Finish by fluffing the loops and straightening the tails. Fold the ribbon ends in half and cut them into a "V" shape by cutting diagonally from the fold to the bottom edge.
